What is Prefetch?
Prefetch files act as intermediate for providing loading
knowledge for faster & optimized loading of application on the computer.
Over a time period, prefetch cache can become stale & cause issues like
slow process or freezing. In such case, you can open prefetch folder &
delete prefetch files & permit operating process generate new set of
prefetch files as you use the computer
Each time you turn on your computer, Windows keeps track
of the way your computer starts & which programs you often open. Windows
saves this knowledge as various small files in the prefetch folder. The next
time you turn on your computer, Windows refers to these files to help speed the
beginning process.
In addition, Windows operating process generate lot of
temporary files while usage. Prefetch files are set of temporary files that
help in better & faster loading of Windows & other program installed on
it. Every time you open a program, the loading knowledge is stored in set of
prefetch files. These files are used for faster loading of same program next
time, without computer having to reference original source.
Prefetching knowledge is the process whereby knowledge
that is expected to be requested is read ahead in to the cache. Prefetching
boot files & applications decreases the time needed to start Windows XP
Professional & start applications.
How Prefetch affect the speed of your Computer?
Plenty of forums recommend not to delete the Prefetch,
cause it will affect the loading time of the applications. It is not necessary
to empty your prefetch folder but will affect your computer performance. It can
accumulate much knowledge over time. This makes the operating process so busy
loading bits & pieces of plenty of applications in to memory that it ends
up slowing down the boot process.
Prefetch files are nice for your computer as it speed up
the process of opening program applications. However, it is recommended to
delete them one time in a week or one time every two weeks to make definite
prefetch contents are updated & relevant as per current computer state

This has been debunked. Please do not delete your prefetch files.
Windows automatically trims this file set over time. It is unnecessary and can cause your system to SLOW DOWN as it builds the prefetch all over again. Prefetch is basically an index, not portions of programs.
